This came to mind earlier. And this documentary just moved my artist AND Archeologist geeks inside me!
First, I have too tell you that I am an INSANE Archeology nerd! To me, Archeology shows us things we had no idea were in our very distant past. As well as gives mankind this sense of how sophisticated our ancestors TRULY were.
This passage from the film expresses it so eloquently, how magnificent this discovered treasure is:
“There’s the beauty of the nature and the beauty of the sculpture, side-by-side. Like an extraordinary garden. A strange Victorian grotto of the underworld.”
Just beautiful. This was a documentary about one of the largest caches of ancient artifacts found from the distant past in recent years. This isn’t new, it was posted in March of 2023. And the expedition took place in 2008 thru 2013. But I love to watch it, because of the large array of relics. Many from different cultures. Most were plundered by Rome when they conquered the region. They dated most of the pieces to the time of Nero (a coin was found which confirms). That puts it before 54 A.D.
Interesting fact: Mt. Vesuvius erupted during this time period as well, and buried Pompeii and quite certainly caused large weather issues for some time.
The artist who funded the exposition is our host in this film, and his name is Damien Hirst from the UK, I believe. Don’t quote me on that. I haven’t been formally taught all of the art icons sadly. But I am in awe of this presentation. I personally commend the entire crew, that I felt they nailed it.
You can find it on YouTube Tube easily. Sorry, I believe I have to have a business plan to link pictures or websites, etc. But it is easy to find.
There are so many beautiful pieces. It would have been insanely awesome to have seen this in person. My favorites were some of the busts and other fantasy pieces. The largest piece envisions a time of agony for several people. And not only is it powerful, it screams it’s statement. My heart just sank when I saw their poses and expressions. Incredibly powerful.
I am not going to break down the entire movie, because you should watch it instead π The archeologist who reported on the first piece, was Peter Weiss, while working on his doctorate. He contacted, Andrew Lerner and he was approached by Mr. Hirst with funding for the expedition.
The pieces with the remnants of the ocean life that made them home, were a haunting combination. Ranging from different parts of Asia, Egypt and Rome. The men who found and retrieved them, providing us with comparison of their size and the pieces. And their sheer size was beyond bewildering.
If you are a fan of art or archeology, this is an awesome watch. I’m really glad they documented it for the record. My son and I watched it together last year, and he can tell you I was awestruck.
Has anyone already seen it? Or perhaps you watched it, and want to share your thought?
